Coordinate Studio FAQ
- How do I find the coordinates of a place?
- Open the Search & lookup tab (it replaced the old Coordinate Viewer) and type a place name to search with Mapbox Geocoding, or click anywhere on the map. The latitude and longitude are shown with 6 decimal places (about 10 cm) and can be copied with one click.
- How do I jump to a known coordinate?
- In the Search & lookup tab, enter latitude and longitude in decimal degrees, for example 41.1829 and -8.6891, and press Go to coordinates. Values outside ±90 for latitude or ±180 for longitude, or text that is not a number, show an inline error instead of moving the map.
- Which coordinate formats can I enter?
- Decimal degrees, latitude first: 41.1829, -8.6891. Latitude must be between -90 and 90 and longitude between -180 and 180; a decimal comma (41,1829) is accepted in the single fields. Anything else, like 41.18abc or 95, shows an inline error and the point is not added.
- How does bulk import work?
- Paste one point per line as "lat,lng label" (comma, space or tab separated) or as a JSON object such as {"lat": 41.18, "lng": -8.69, "label": "Porto"}. Valid lines are added to the route; invalid ones stay in the box with their line number and the reason, so you can fix and import them again.
- What can I export?
- The route as structured JSON, a GeoJSON FeatureCollection of Point features or a plain [lng, lat] array, copied to the clipboard or downloaded as a .geojson file. GeoJSON uses longitude first, as the spec requires.
- Why do distance and ETA need a Mapbox token?
- Driving distance and travel time come from the Mapbox Directions API, so those tabs only work when the site is built with a Mapbox access token. Adding, editing and exporting points does not use the Directions API.
- Are my coordinates sent anywhere?
- Routes stay in your browser and are not stored on a server. Only map tiles, place searches and directions requests go to Mapbox, and only the coordinates needed for that request.
