JSON Studio FAQ
- Is my JSON or YAML uploaded to a server?
- No. Parsing, formatting, querying, YAML conversion and validation all run in your browser, so the data never leaves your device.
- Which formats can I convert to and from?
- JSON can be exported to YAML and CSV, and opening a .yaml, .yml or .csv file converts it to JSON. It can also generate TypeScript, Zod and Go type definitions from a sample.
- Which JSON Schema version is used for validation?
- Validation uses Ajv with its default JSON Schema draft-07 support and reports every error, not just the first one.
- Can it parse JSON with comments or trailing commas?
- Yes. Turn on JSON5 mode to accept comments, trailing commas, single quotes and unquoted keys.
- How do I query part of a document?
- Use the Query tab with a JSONPath expression such as $.users[*].email; matching values are listed as you type.
- Is there a keyboard shortcut to format, and how are errors shown?
- Press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on macOS) to pretty-print the document. Invalid JSON shows the exact line and column with the offending line and a caret under the problem.
- How do I convert YAML to JSON (or JSON to YAML)?
- Open the YAML tab (or go to /json-studio?tab=yaml), paste YAML or JSON and pick the direction. Syntax errors show the exact line and column, with a button that moves the cursor there. Inputs can be up to 5 million characters.
- How are YAML anchors, merge keys, multiple documents and dates handled?
- Aliases are expanded and << merge keys applied; circular aliases or ones that expand past a million values are rejected instead of freezing the page. Documents separated by --- become a JSON array. Following the YAML 1.2 core schema, dates and yes/no stay strings, and are quoted on the way back so YAML 1.1 tools don't misread them.
